An ingrown toenail is a common foot condition that occurs when the corner or side of the toenail grows into the skin. This can cause pain, inflammation, and sometimes infection.

Ingrown toenails can range in severity from mild to severe. Mild ingrown toenails may be only slightly painful and irritating, while severe ingrown toenails can be extremely painful, leading to infection of the surrounding skin, which may require antibiotics.

Wearing tight-fitting shoes: Tight shoes can put pressure on the toenails, which can make them more likely to grow into the skin.

Cutting your toenails too short: Cutting your toenails too short can leave sharp edges that can dig into the skin.

Trauma to the toenail: If you injure your toenail, it is more likely to grow into the skin.

Genetics: Some people are more likely to develop ingrown toenails than others.

The symptoms of ingrown nail can vary depending on the severity of the conditon. Contact us if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

Pain: The pain can be mild or severe and can be worse when you walk or wear shoes.

Redness: The skin around the ingrown toenail may be red and swollen.

Swelling: The skin around the ingrown toenail may be swollen.

Discharge: The ingrown toenail may produce a foul-smelling discharge.

Infection: If the ingrown toenail becomes infected, you may also experience fever, chills, and other signs of infection.

Treatment options depend on your condition. Book an appointment with one of our expert podiatrist who will work with you to diagnose and develop a care plan tailored to your specific needs. Possible treatment options include:

  1. Remove portion of the nail - The podiatrist may remove the offending portion of the nail, however, if the area is too painful to remove without local anesthetic, the patient may need to return for a follow-up appointment.
  2. Nail Surgery - the most effective and permanent treatment for chronic and recurring ingrown toenails. The podiatrist will either remove the entire nail or a part of it. This procedure is performed under a local anesthetic in the clinic
