Fungal Nails

Onychomycosis can be more than just a cosmetic concern. Without treatment, toenails can become so thick that they press against the inside of shoes, causing pressure, irritation, and pain. Fingernail infections can also lead to psychological, social, or employment-related problems.

Thick Nails

Thick nails may become hard and brittle, and curve over the tips of the fingers or toes. Over time, the nails may become curled and turn white or yellow. If left untreated this thickening of the nail may force the nail plate to separate from the nail bed.

Fungal Nail is caused by a fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments, such as the feet. Yeast and molds also can cause nail infections.

Thick Nails are caused by:

  • Fungal nail infections
  • Age-related changes: due to reduced blood circulation
  • Excess pressure from footwear: can cause microtrauma
  • Single or repeated injuries to the nail: can damage the nail root and lead to permanent nail growth abnormalities
  • Systemic medical conditions:  (e.g., psoriasis)

The symptoms of fungal nail  and thick nail can vary depending on the severity of the infection. Book an appointment with us if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:
